My nervous system calms a little.

I am in a shelter now, not getting sleep deprived in the car in the oppressive heat.

Next Monday, I leave for the UK because, on the 2nd of August, I have my first in-person meet in Liverpool for the TEDxHope Street event, where I will give my talk next February, “What if all that’s missing is connection?”

That’s the result of my four years of struggle and uncovering the hidden economy all around us.

The solutions are everywhere.

They just aren’t connected.

And they are in us, all it will take is for us to see it.

Thank you for seeing me and for everyone who has been chipping in to help. It’s a LOT of work just to do the crowdfunder, especially on a tank that’s been running progressively lower over the course of the last four years. (They say it takes six months to three years to recover from years of homelessness.)

I’m eternally grateful not to be at this alone.

Which is the whole point.

It hit me today that over the next few months, I’ll be able to find a roof to come back to in America. Someplace safe. Someplace with some privacy!

For the first time in my life really, some place of my own.

The sleep deprivation is getting to me a little.

I was driving to the board meeting for one of our local homeless charities, Safe Harbor, where I sit on the board as a lived experience advisor.

There was a car I thought was parked.

It wasn’t!

I swerved to avoid hitting it.

The question of the day: do I eat up my in hand funds on more emergency hotels?

I really need rest.

Then, we had a Connectioning call.

Thank you all so much who attended and for the support, it was so wonderful to see you and such a boon to my soul. (I will send the follow up email just as soon as I can)

Later in the day, still debating what to do, I received a phone call.

It was so unexpected but —

Open Door Shelter had a space!

So pardon today’s email coming so late.

It’s been a lot of paperwork.

This is the most wonderful and homey shelter I’ve been in.

Hopefully tomorrow will be rested enough to tell you more.

So the world knows there is something we can actually do to make the change.

The rewires wealth and power for good.

Evil will not prevail.

There is too much in the human spirit for us to fail.

That people have been working on sometimes for decades.

Pouring their blood sweat and tears into, not knowing whether they’d live to see the fruits of their labour.

I’ve been studying the culture science and network science and and systems theory behind this.

I’m telling you we now have the opportunity to live to see it.

Not just in our lifetimes, but within the next year or two see a massive cultural shift that begins to change everything.

To a fairer economy and better future.

Similar to how the #metoo movement was the result of the hard work of Tarana Burke’s efforts over years building the strong social ties that made it possible once a celebrity tweeted about it.

The community wealth movement is already something we intuitively know and have been building and just hasn’t been voiced in the culture yet.

I’m here to voice it in the culture.

The more support I can get in doing that, the faster it will happen.

But I’m only able to do maybe ten percent of what I could from my current situation.

Yesterday, someone offered me a hotel room.

I caught myself turning it down.

Terrified, not of the room, but of the cost and the next eviction right around the corner.

I counted it up once and I had some form of eviction more than forty times in the past four years.

I told my best friend.

He said “You’ve been institutionalised to the outside.

That gutted me.

No wonder people think homeless people don’t want to be helped.

But I DO want a home.

I just need it to not run out within days.

I need wraparound supports to recover from years of this, from all the things I’ve gone through no one can see.

That’s why this big push for a year’s worth of stability.

If I can get cited in Scotland’s parliament with six weeks of stability (staying with best friend)

Imagine what I can do with six months or a year?

Imagine what I can do for YOU.

For getting visibility on what you are bringing into the world to build a better future.

Just a few people can be the marketing arm of a movement of movements.

This is the highest leverage place you can invest in a better future.

What’s in the box?

WE are in the box.

Let me show you the illustration then we’ll get into it.

Anyone clever with an idea?

Anywho, let’s look at each part of the box — according to systems theory.

Donella Meadows wrote about this before she passed, in Leverage Points: places to intervene in a system.

The funny thing about humans is, status quo economics assumes we’re rational actors.

Despite several Nobel Prizes being won for behavioural economics, which shows we’re anything but.

The fact that we ignore this completely is the joke virtually no one is in one.

We are the butts of said joke, folks.

Only it’s not very funny.

It’s hurting people.

And we’ve got to get out.

Spreading this messages is one of the highest-leverage ways we can.

As Meadows shows us.

If you read through that entire writeup, you’ll find that the highest leverage things we can do is change beliefs at scale, change the paradigms each of us are in.

Which is (mostly) a mental thing.

But you’ll find we tend to do the opposite.

Take this story from Leverage Points:

“Those of us who were trained by the great Jay Forrester at MIT have all absorbed one of his favorite stories. “People know intuitively where leverage points are,” he says. “Time after time I’ve done an analysis of a company, and I’ve figured out a leverage point — in inventory policy, maybe, or in the relationship between sales force and productive force, or in personnel policy. Then I’ve gone to the company and discovered that there’s already a lot of attention to that point. Everyone is trying very hard to push it IN THE WRONG DIRECTION!”

Ah, what are we like?

Now look back to the graphic.

What are we doing right now (mostly)?

Arguing politics.

Trying to get reform enacted, policy changes.

Which are super low leverage points.

All that means is it’s something you put a LOT of energy into for minimal (or even unpredictable) results.

Thinking about it.

Tax wealth not work? A constant battle between rich and poor.

But what if there’s something that’s a win-win for both?

Btw, my buddy Josh Ketry over at recently reminded me about Naval Ravikant’s marathon podcast.

He used leverage to get rich.

WE can use it so that -all- our wealthy without destroying the planet.

It’s worth a listen to understand how the wealthy use leverage to gain and maintain vast and cumulative amounts of wealth. (And how we could rewire that for the common good.)

Back to leverage points and the diagram.

So, like the story, we’re pressing on these leverage points — in exactly the wrong direction.

The only options the media gives you is policy, reform, fighting each other.

Virutally no one is talking about the 300+ movements to a better future.

Virtually no one is talking about better futures being built right now, by people just like you and me who said “Screw this, let’s try something else.”

Shout out to and for the excellent work they are doing to get media that actually inspire people to start building better futures now out into the media.

There are very few in this space.

As outlined my the Visibility Gap maps I’ve been working on.

Sharing the stories of those didn’t wait for Washington or Westminster.

Who just started building.

The behaviour scientists will tell you…

Listen, I’m not saying those three sides of the boxes don’t need to be pressed on.

I’m saying there is tonnes of media on that.

And virtually none on the highest leverage options we have.

Here’s another graphic to help show it.

This isn’t politics.

It’s just systems theory.

Thomas Paine wrote ONE pamphlet in the time of the printing press that would have been nearly considered viral by today’s standards in a population of over two million.

And in a matter of months got everyone from fighting over policy and reform to getting on the same page and declaring independence.

Most content today?

Fighting over policy and reform.

Let’s change that.

Let’s share the news that we have all the solutions we need.

So we can all start living a new economic system that prioritises people over profit, trust over control, and cooperation over competition.

Never underestimate your small acts.

Let me show you one of my favourite quotes ever.

And where did it come from?

A little Merseyside working class comedy show.

Brilliance comes from the most unexpected of places.

And it’s the little things we are doing that are adding up.

I haven’t had a lot of capacity to create connections through homelessness, despite my believing deeply all that’s missing is connection.

But last year I did one Connectioning call.

I didn’t think it had much impact.

Then I got this message.

My message? After four years of research, I’ve found that we have ALL the solutions we need, they’re in us. They’re everywhere.

Most people just haven’t heard about them.

And we’re just not connected.

I hosted one session to connect.

Who knows the impact other things I’ve said and done have made?

Could your small thing be to make more of these connections happen?

Speaking of connections

I made a new one yesterday.

Another homeless person came into the Sheetz fuel stop for refuge.

I couldn’t help but overhear him on the phone.

Someone in his family was probably dying but they were a city away and he had no car.

He was crying.

Now, I don’t usually give or take rides from strangers.

And if you work on stereotypes, this looked like a guy you are told to be afraid of.

Head to toe tattoos.

Cowboy hat.

Torn jeans.

But I hadn’t even seen him at that point.

He was on the other side of the booth wall.

He hung up the phone and I heard him put his head down and cry more.

I dunno what possessed me because I usually wouldn’t put myself at risk being alone in a car with a stranger.

But without really thinking, I got up, went round the corner.

I said “Hey mate, I’ll give you a ride.”

I then messaged my loved ones and the group chat for Connectioning.

Just in case no one ever heard from me again they knew what happened!

But you know what?

Spoiler alert: it was ok.

We chatted on the way, he immediately knew what community wealth was and what needed to happen.

Most poor people get the solution.

But all he really cared about was getting to his mama.

Not biological one.

But as a multiple adoptee I get the importance of found family.

I waited for him at the hospital, he was able to see her, she hadn’t passed yet thankfully, then dropped him off at another fuel stop closer to the hospital.

My car started overheating again.

But so worth it.

Those connections are all that matter in the end.

And they’re correct on the diagnosis – but not the solution.

Recently on Diary of a CEO he, Steven Bartlett, and Daniel Priestley were all talking about solving wealth inequality by asking RICH people!

That’s a bit like gathering a group of able bodied people to solve disabled peoples’ crises!

We -must- get this message to go mainstream or they’ll continue to point to the wrong solutions.

Humanity has a chance.

But it depends on stories of people building a future that works for all life actually getting told.

Here’s a map of the visibility gap, which you’ll be hearing more about soon. It’s the result of over four years of research and critical to the change that we need.

Help me make this change.

If I can make Scottish parliament while homeless given just six weeks with a roof and some support, imagine what I can do with stability for more than a day or weeks at a time.

I struggle to write this today, because the heat inside the car, cramped, all the noises going past it at night, roaring engines, means I’ve been running on chronic sleep deprivation.

I love my car, it’s a gift that was also crowdfunded and I’m ever grateful for — it’s gotten me a massive step up.

But I need another step now.

I’ve barely got anything left in the tank.

I cant’ spend anything else on emergency hotels (even if I had it, which I don’t because the crowdfunder funds don’t come in immediately!), its’ not a long term solution, and it just gives me a tease of a breath before I go back to drowning.

But I can make a video viral once when I get six weeks of rest. And if I could just make consistent GOOD videos?

Oh it’s game over for the old paradigm!

Help me get funded and we can create the new economy in the same time it took Thomas Paine’s common sense to work 250 years ago.

Recently I wrote about crowdfunding a new economy.

Thanks for being part of a network of tens of thousands of people who are ready for a fairer economy and a better future.

I’ve got some exciting updates about upcoming projects and tools that are going to make that a lot easier for all of us.

First, I have been writing two guides.

The first, is our answer to the Powell Memo, which in 1971 coordinated people in power to not only keep but to broaden the class divide, primarily through education and media, using psychological principles that have now been fine-tuned by marketing execs the world over.

This is The Power Memo. And it shows us how to reverse this.

Second is our sequel to Thomas Paine’s common sense, which in 1776 showed everyone that we’re actually all on the same page and inspired the revolutionary war in America.

It sold 500k copies in a population of 2.5 million at a time when the internet was a printing press, and was cited orally in pubs.

I talk to people every day on the street who intuitively know this is not working.

And that we don’t have a unified message.

It seems obvious to us, but like no one else is on the same page.

This is that unified message, but adapted for a world with billions.

This is Of Course: A New Common Sense, and it shows how everyone is on the same page, and what we can actually do (hint: this time it’s NOT revolution, but it does have practical steps).

I am launching these with a big crowdfunder on the 29th of June to fund the infrastructure for everyone coming in asking What can I do? How can I start? How do I find my people?

This is one big push to get the support we need to create a space and supports to get these questions answered and get people the actual help they need to start.

This is a bit of a barn raising for the 300+ movements to a new economy, and if you’d like to chip in by taking a couple of actions a day to help, we have a group chat and a dashboard for that and could really use your help!
